Vehicle Theft Remains a Widespread Problem
A new analysis from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) shows that vehicle thefts in 2025 fell 23% from 2024, reaching the lowest level in several decades.
Although vehicle theft declined nationally in 2025, hundreds of thousands of vehicles were still stolen across the country. According to the NICB, a vehicle was stolen approximately every 48 seconds in the United States.
Data from the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer (CDE) shows that vehicle theft most commonly affects people close to home. Residential areas remain a common location for vehicle theft, where vehicles may be parked for long periods of time during everyday routines.
Vehicle theft can also lead to problems beyond the loss of the vehicle itself. The CDE also shows that more than 174,000 incidents of motor vehicle theft were linked to destruction, damage, or vandalism of property. Vehicle theft was also connected to breaking and entering and stolen property offenses.
