A stolen 2023 Lexus LX 600 was located inside a shipping container at a New Jersey port, just hours away from potentially being shipped out of the country.

What began as a fraudulent vehicle purchase quickly developed into a search involving local law enforcement, U.S. Customs officials, dozens of shipping containers, and a FortiTrak device that made recovery possible.

A Fraudulent Purchase

The incident began at a dealership in New Jersey, where a customer purchased the Lexus using what was later discovered to be fraudulent identification. Once the dealership became aware of the fraud and the vehicle was reported stolen, FortiTrak began working with law enforcement to assist with the recovery.

Location information from the FortiTrak device was transferred to police, giving investigators a general location where the vehicle could be located.

The Factory Device Was Removed

The Lexus was taken on September 4. By September 7, the vehicle’s factory-installed location device had been removed and discarded.

Thieves often search for and disable factory tracking systems in an effort to prevent a stolen vehicle from being located. Because these systems are installed by the manufacturer, their components and general locations may be more familiar to experienced thieves.

Investigators later located the factory device miles away from the vehicle at a body shop in New Jersey.

The FortiTrak device, however, had been installed covertly and remained hidden in the Lexus.

That difference would become critical to the recovery.

The Search Leads to a New Jersey Port

Location data from FortiTrak eventually led investigators to an area containing approximately 75 shipping containers.

Vehicles being transported overseas can be brought to ports, loaded into shipping containers, and placed aboard cargo ships. Investigators believed the Lexus was somewhere within this group of containers and could be only hours away from leaving the country.

U.S. Customs officials began moving containers in an effort to find it. After approximately 10 containers were moved, the vehicle still hadn’t been located. They continued the search the following day.

One Movement Changed Everything

Officers returned and began moving additional containers. When a specific container was shifted, the FortiTrak device detected movement.

That information helped law enforcement narrow the search to the correct container.

When investigators opened it, they found the stolen Lexus inside, positioned to be transported out of the country.

A Second Vehicle Was Found

The Lexus wasn’t the only vehicle inside.

Investigators discovered another vehicle in the container that had its VIN removed, raising concerns that it too had been stolen.

As a result, the recovery of the FortiTrak-equipped Lexus also helped authorities locate a second suspected stolen vehicle that wasn’t equipped with FortiTrak.

Police suspect these stolen vehicles may be connected to a larger vehicle theft operation rather than an isolated incident. The Lexus remains at the location as authorities continue their investigation.

Why Covert Recovery Technology Matters

The Lexus’s factory location device was discovered and removed within days. FortiTrak remained concealed and continued operating.

When the vehicle was eventually hidden among dozens of shipping containers, that covert device provided information that helped investigators narrow down its location.

The Lexus was hours from leaving the country. Thanks to FortiTrak, it never did.
